2026Education in the Age of AI
2026 – Education in the Age of AI
Artificial intelligence is changing our world faster than any technology before it. It shapes how we learn, work and use knowledge. But which competencies will people need in future? How must schools, universities and continuing education change? And how can we use the opportunities of AI for education and society? Experts discussed the future of learning and shaping in a world defined by AI.

2025A Strong Europe – How?
2025 – A Strong Europe – How?
The world is becoming more multipolar, geopolitical tensions are rising, and the American president is calling the transatlantic commitment to Europe's security into question. One thing is clear: the old continent, with its cultural diversity, will increasingly have to rely on itself to secure peace and prosperity. But what does that mean? At this year's conference, economists and security policy experts discuss the role of Europe and Switzerland in a changing world.

2024The Capacity for Innovation – A Challenge for Every Society
2024 – The Capacity for Innovation – A Challenge for Every Society
People would rather abolish themselves than renew themselves.
And yet a modern society can only hold its own in global economic competition through constant innovation. Innovation cannot be taken for granted – it is an interdisciplinary process. It begins with the curiosity of individuals who want to understand things and solve problems. That curiosity gives rise to inventions which, if their surroundings and society play along, can be developed into innovations through targeted investment. Developing innovations and bringing them to success therefore requires taking society along and establishing a lasting culture of innovation. This is why a society's ethical standards and its well-being are closely linked to a successful culture of innovation.
We want to learn to understand innovation: Who drives innovation in a modern society? How must innovation be conceived so that individuals see it as an enrichment? Which educational and economic factors are needed to enable and accelerate innovation?

2023Is the World Splitting into New Blocs? Is Globalization Ending?
2023 – Is the World Splitting into New Blocs? Is Globalization Ending?
Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the growing tensions between the United States and China have made it abundantly clear: the world is no longer flat, as Thomas Friedman wrote, and the end of history has not been reached, as Francis Fukuyama believed!
Instead, we are witnessing the world fall back into a bloc mentality long thought to be overcome, with potentially extremely costly and dramatic economic, social and, sadly, military consequences. In this year's discussion we want to take a closer look at some of these developments and understand the challenges they may pose for our society and for globally operating companies.

2022Inflation Has Learned to Run
2022 – Inflation Has Learned to Run
Prices are rising faster than at any time in the past 50 years. Younger generations are shocked, while older ones try to place the return of inflation within their experience of the 1970s. How serious is this development? What needs to be done? Who are the winners and who the losers? And who bears responsibility?
Former ECB banker Jürgen Stark, SNB director Carlos Lenz and Prof. em. Peter Kugler, who has studied the phenomenon of prices from a historical perspective, are among the renowned speakers addressing our conference theme. They are joined by energy expert and ElCom head Urs Meister, who focuses on energy prices – currently, as is well known, among the main drivers of inflation.
As a preview of our conference, guest speaker Jürgen Stark writes:
“Was inflation ever gone or under control? Looking at asset prices: no. For several quarters now, however, a new price dynamic has emerged in the cost of living: inflation has learned to run. Central banks initially did not react at all, then only hesitantly, because they assumed it was a temporary phenomenon driven solely by energy prices. As early as late summer 2021 it was clear that inflationary dynamics were broadening. The longer-lasting effects of the pandemic, such as disrupted supply chains and supply bottlenecks, were misjudged. Structural factors, such as demographics and the limits of globalisation, were also ignored. The longer inflation remains high, the harder it becomes to bring it back under control without causing economic collateral damage.”

2021Nature at Its Limit
2021 – Nature at Its Limit
The 2020 conference had to be cancelled last year because of the coronavirus pandemic and will now take place on 23 October 2021 with the same theme – which the pandemic has made even more relevant.
We are delighted that Professors Dr. Mosbrugger and Dr. Freiwald have once again agreed to speak this year, and that we have been able to win Dr. Werner Brandt, an outstanding business leader in German industry. Using RWE AG as an example, he will outline the plans and options of a leading energy supplier in the face of climate change.
Never before has humanity as a whole been as well off as it is today – despite the coronavirus pandemic: life expectancy and access to education, clean water and energy are at a global all-time high. Yet this success rests on an unsustainable overuse of nature. Over the past seven decades in particular, we have substantially increased both social and economic capital, but at the expense of natural capital. The consequences are now obvious: climate change, loss of biodiversity, over-fertilised ecosystems, overfishing, the pollution and acidification of the oceans, harmful air quality – all of these are closely connected consequences of this overuse of nature, and they directly threaten our future.

2019The Endangered Middle Class
2019 – The Endangered Middle Class
For half a century, Europe's middle class has been a guarantor of political stability and social cohesion. Over the past 20 years or so, this most important section of the population has lost a great deal of ground in many countries. Germany and Switzerland are no exception, even if conditions there still appear comparatively better than in countries such as Italy or France. Middle incomes have risen slightly, but far less than both high and low salaries. The middle class finds it increasingly difficult to set itself apart from those below and – as it once could – to move up. This loss of position is leading to growing discontent. Our conference explores the causes and discusses the political consequences.

2018Optimizing the Brain – Dream or Nightmare?
2018 – Optimizing the Brain – Dream or Nightmare?
Doping in sport is illegal. But what about intellectual competition – in school-leaving exams, at university or at work? Will natural methods of boosting our mental performance – learning and practice – continue to dominate, or will brain doping become ubiquitous? Shouldn't we exploit our most important resource, the brain, by every means available in economic competition, especially when innovation decides the future?
What physical, chemical or biological means already exist today, and what can we expect in the near future, to increase our capacity to learn, sharpen our concentration and improve our reaction speed? If prostheses can be controlled by the power of thought alone, how should we judge the coupling of human and machine in future? Which capabilities of the human brain do artificial intelligence systems need?
Is declining mental performance in old age already an illness? Is it ethically justifiable to dope “healthy” people with psychotropic drugs (the largest and most important class of medicines today) to make our brains fitter? Can the online trade in psychotropic drugs that already exists today be brought under control?

2017The Divided Generation Y
2017 – The Divided Generation Y
Generation Y – delight or dismay?
After the baby boomers and Generation X comes Generation Y: born somewhere between the 1980s and the 2000s. Because many of them experienced the turn of the millennium as teenagers, they are also called millennials, or Generation MTV. Generation Y is said to seek fulfilment above all in their working lives, while knowing full well that they must also look for it outside work. They make their loyalty to an employer conditional and confidently claim professional self-determination and independence. But to what extent do these and other characterisations of Generation Y actually match how this generation sees itself? And to what extent do they reflect a general shift in values across society?
There is also potential for conflict when the baby boomers in particular place high expectations on this generation to secure prosperity and pay for pensions. Born into prosperity and highly educated, but often only moderately ambitious about pursuing conventional careers or putting their private lives second to work, they supposedly lay claim to leadership positions at a young age, while also indulging in hedonism and craving recognition. At the same time, social freedoms have grown over the past three decades and individualisation continues to advance. Small wonder, then, that this generation actually takes up the many opportunities on offer. Generation Y are, after all, the children of globalisation. Should the baby boomers worry that their expectations will be met only partly or not at all? What exactly are the values of Generation Y, and can they be generalised at all? Or is the label Generation Y purely a marketing concept? We want to explore these questions and discuss them with fascinating speakers.

2016Art – Engine of Society?
2016 – Art – Engine of Society?
Even the wording of the theme was controversial within the board organising this year's anniversary conference – 10 years of “Themen unserer Zeit”. When we look at or listen to “established” art, it may well have been avant-garde in its day – art historians can analyse that after the fact – but we feel on safe ground discussing it. We easily forget that many times more than what has survived received no attention, or only very brief attention; today it is hard to tell whether that was unjust.
But when we engage with the many forms of expression of the present, including performance art or happenings, the verdict is often: interesting, but surely that isn't art. In contemporary music we often hear nothing but noises produced with great effort, and we go home shaking our heads.
We feel much the same about overly modern theatre and opera productions.
Do we fail to recognise that we are meant to be made aware of something new in our society, to be moved towards new shores – or are we simply being fooled?

2015Elites of Our Time
2015 – Elites of Our Time
“Until recently, elites were little more than a phantom pain left over from the demise of aristocratic societies, but now sociology is rediscovering them, without it yet being clear what their function is and whether and how they differ from the upper classes of old societies.” So says the sociologist Dirk Baecker, who continues elsewhere: “That elites still exist is empirically beyond doubt: one recognises them by their privileges, their habitus and their mechanisms of recruitment.”

2014Big Data – Curse or Blessing?
2014 – Big Data – Curse or Blessing?
More, faster and available everywhere: this is no longer just an aspiration but long since the reality of how we access digital data today. Information can be retrieved and edited in real time, at any moment and from anywhere. These possibilities have permanently changed both our private and our working lives. But what impact does this development have on society and politics?
New decrees and laws are regularly drafted on the grounds of improving data security. But are they not at the same time an instrument for the state to better monitor and control its own and foreign citizens? Increasingly, we want more protection of our private data from Google, the NSA, the state and others. At the same time, it is precisely the sharing of private data that opens up new possibilities – for example for people with diabetes and for older people, a growing segment of our population.
How have our perception of risk and our behaviour changed in the 21st century? What role do the media play? Do we need to protect ourselves better, and if so, from what and how? Do we have suitable tools to identify digital risks early, assess them realistically and counter them? This year's discussion is devoted to these important and fascinating questions, and as always we want to look at the theme from different angles with selected experts.

2013Gender Balance – Gender Trap?
2013 – Gender Balance – Gender Trap?
Our title sounds good – who could object to men and women having equal rights, equal weight and a role in society that matches their abilities? In 1994 the German sociologist Jutta Allmendinger became one of the first professors to bring her baby to lectures. She managed to push this through against her colleagues and students. Would the same be conceivable in a leadership position in business?
And if so – shouldn't men be allowed to bring their babies too? Do we need a quota for women? Or is comprehensive state childcare the answer: infant care, day nurseries, childminders, all-day schools? Do women, given the professional competence, even want to follow the path currently laid out for an equally well-qualified man? At our conference on 26 October 2013, speakers approaching the topic from very different positions will examine and discuss how women's potential can be realised without their having to become “men”.

2012The Great Stagnation After the Party
2012 – The Great Stagnation After the Party
Even before the financial crisis that began in 2007, a rapid rise in economic inequality was being observed in the United States and Europe. This was not a problem as long as the economy as a whole was growing; one person's gains did not come at another's expense, because the cake as a whole was getting bigger. Since the outbreak of the financial crisis, however, the major industrialised economies overseas and in Europe have stagnated. Because of high debt and only very slow deleveraging, economic growth will remain anaemic for a long time to come.
As a result, distributional conflicts are sharpening on the one hand, and on the other, politics is no longer able to keep its promise of upward mobility for the middle class. In the wake of the crisis, the middle class is therefore coming under increasing pressure. Must we fundamentally recalibrate – that is, revise downwards – our expectations of future gains in prosperity, or will we return relatively quickly to the old growth trend? These questions matter not only from an economic perspective; they also touch on the middle class's view of itself, its social prospects and its role in society.

2011Innovation and Growth – Challenges for Informed, Democratic Societies
2011 – Innovation and Growth – Challenges for Informed, Democratic Societies
The protest movement against the “Stuttgart 21” construction project has confronted democratically legitimised institutions with new challenges, and the fierce reactions reveal fundamental conflicts. For us, the key question is whether growth-generating major projects and technical innovations can still be realised at all in democratic states with extensive rights of objection. The September 2011 conference sets out to explore whether it is still possible to carry out major technical projects in democratically constituted states.
Do the resistance movements that spring up each time not also reveal a more fundamental hostility to progress and a general fear of change? Beyond the realisation of major construction projects and other innovations, we will discuss how processes of change can be encouraged in various groups in society (such as companies), and how hostility to progress can thus be countered.

2010Pandemic and Vaccination: Psychosis and Business
2010 – Pandemic and Vaccination: Psychosis and Business
Fears of epidemics unsettle the public, the media amplify these fears, and the pharmaceutical industry stands accused of dishonest profiteering: bird flu, swine flu and the like are examples. Important vaccinations against serious diseases are caught up in the growing scepticism and therefore neglected – the vaccination against cervical cancer, for instance. Major sources of infection do not receive the attention they need, because they are not discussed in the media.
The aim of the conference is to examine this important topic through detailed contributions from science, industry, politics, the media and ethics, so that participants can, as far as possible, form their own unbiased judgement on these important issues.

2009Russia, the Phoenix
2009 – Russia, the Phoenix
Russia – a great power, a partner in cooperation and Europe's energy supplier – raises both hopes and fears among many Europeans. Democratisation and state monopolism, an opening of the media and the murder of journalists critical of the system together present a puzzling picture of our large neighbour. The conference sets out to renew, from different angles, the image of Russia that our media often distort.

2008New Media – New Humans
2008 – New Media – New Humans
New media – media distributed in digital form – are part of everyday life for most people today, yet they have been available to the general public for less than 20 years. Correspondingly little experience exists of how people react to this new form of spreading information, and whether and how it changes them. “Our thinking – the way we take in, process and store knowledge – is being redefined,” confirms Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Axel Springer, in an interview with the Handelszeitung.

2007 – The Demographic Factor – A Challenge for Our Community of Values
The conference examines demographic change in our society. While the economic consequences – for pensions or economic growth, for example – have long been discussed in politics and the media, the speakers analyse the social dimension of an ageing, shrinking society.
